Penguin Feeding Time

Bisque fired this sculpture ready for trying some RAKU glazes to bring out the black and white patterns on this Humboldt penguin, which are medium-sized penguins native to the coasts of Chile and Peru in South America

RAKU!!!! It works, my kiln works and the penguin has been fired, a well deserved bath and a clean up, really pleased with the result. My first solo RAKU kiln firing. Love it !!

The white crackle glaze has worked well, wax resist worked and reduction has coated the clay in black carbon, the pink clay is showing through the white crackle in places where these penguins have very little fur/feathers to help them regulate their temperature living in warmer climates. So pleased. I'm going to do a series of black and white animals.

All fired in my homemade RAKU kiln. My first firing of the kiln solo with one of my sculptures inside. A Humboldt penguin finished in reduction for black with white crackle glaze and pink areas showing through. Fired to 980 celcius and held for 15 mins.
